Muzzumil Ruheel is a contemporary artist who works with words. In his text-based and conceptual practice, language is the material: phrases, letters, script and the silences between them are cut, layered, repeated and left unfinished until they start to ask questions about history, belief and the stories we inherit.
Language as material
Ruheel’s work sits where fiction meets fact. A sentence overheard, a line from a history book, a proverb everyone repeats: each becomes a form to look at rather than only a message to read. The works are quiet and often minimal, but they carry the weight of the words they hold. They draw on history, literature, cultural norms, faith, memory and philosophy, and leave the final reading to the viewer.
Calligraphy and the letterform
Muzzumil Ruheel’s practice grows out of a long and complex relationship with the written word, particularly the visual and cultural traditions of Urdu, Persian and Arabic writing. His early training in Urdu, Persian and Arabic calligraphy remains an important foundation of the practice, and the letterform becomes material for thinking about meaning, memory and perception.
Ruheel uses the letterform as a material through which to investigate language, perception, meaning and memory. Writing may be readable, fragmented, obscured, repeated, layered or transformed into abstraction. A letter can function as language and image at once: it can carry meaning while also becoming a mark, gesture, structure or visual object.
Between reading and seeing
Ruheel often asks what happens when language begins to resist straightforward reading. Words become partially visible; familiar scripts dissolve into dense visual structures; letters lose their immediate linguistic function and acquire another kind of presence. A work may seem to offer something to read, only to withhold a complete reading. That hesitation is part of the experience: the viewer becomes aware of the act of reading itself, and of the desire to find meaning in visual signs.
Urdu, Persian and Arabic-derived scripts matter here not only for their cultural associations but for their visual and linguistic possibilities. They carry histories, sounds and memories, while their forms offer a rich vocabulary of line, rhythm, repetition, density and gesture.
Writing as visual language
This places the practice within the broader field of contemporary text-based and language-based art, where text is not a caption or message but the subject, material, structure or conceptual mechanism of the work. Ruheel’s position in that field is shaped by his knowledge of calligraphy: his work asks what writing becomes when its usual functions are shifted, stretched or interrupted. A calligraphic gesture becomes an abstract mark; a word becomes an image; a sentence becomes a spatial structure.
For Ruheel, the written word is not merely a carrier of information but a site of memory, perception, fiction, silence, identity and interpretation. Calligraphy is the point of departure; the letterform becomes a way of thinking about language, memory and perception.
